Incident involves gunshot, beating
An apparent brawl near the UO campus leads to injuries, arrest
One man was badly beaten. One man was shot. One fled to Rennie’s Landing a few blocks away. And another was later arrested and charged with assault after police were called to a brawl at 14th Avenue and Alder Street early Saturday morning.
The incident unfolded outside Pegas-us Pizza just after 1 a.m. as two groups of men began fighting, police said.
A 61-year-old man was beaten, a gun was fired and then the men dispersed, said police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin.
Witnesses told police there were five to eight men in one group and two in the other, and that some of the men left in a car.
Following witness leads, police went to Rennie’s Landing, a bar at 1214 Kincaid St., and found Christopher J. Wickman, 24, who was in possession of a gun. Wickman was cited for carrying a concealed firearm and taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries from the fight. Police would not say if it was Wickman who fired the shot during the fight, but said he is a friend of the assault victim. Later police took Dejuan M. Brown, 22, into custody after an Oregon State Police trooper stopped a 1978 Chevrolet driving at a high rate of speed and failing to maintain a lane. Beside Brown in the passenger’s seat was a man who had a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police allege that Brown assaulted the 61-year-old man.
“He was pretty badly beaten,” McLaughlin said.
Investigators are still sorting out all the details, she said. “They’re going to have to do more investigating into what exactly happened. There are indications that some of them might have been at a party,” she said. “People may have been drinking.”
