About Mark Baker

Mark Baker has been a journalist for the past 25 years, including 15 at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., and, most recently, sports editor at The Jackson Hole News & Guide in Jackson, Wyo.

His stories have won dozens of state and regional awards over the years, including a 2015 “Best of the West” win among 97 entries for long-form feature writing.

A 1992 graduate of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, ink runs in Mark’s blood. His grandfather, Alton F. Baker Sr., created The Register-Guard in 1930 when he merged The Eugene Guard with The Morning Register.

Mark is also well-versed in digital journalism. He was the first-ever mobile reporter at the R-G, shooting and editing video for registerguard.com, and he’s used social media in recent years to advance his stories and writes a weekly newsletter for the News & Guide.

Mark got his daily newspaper start in Anniston, Ala., after The Anniston Star hired him as a general assignment reporter.
