Woman dies in rollover crash

JUNCTION CITY — A young woman was killed Thursday night in a one-vehicle rollover crash that left a stretch of River Road just south of here strewn with debris.

“From the looks of everything on the road, it appears she was headed north,” Lane County Sheriff’s Sgt. Billy Halverson said at the scene of the crash that happened about 8:45 p.m.

Halverson was not sure whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

“Obviously, she was traveling fast at some point,” he said. “Probably safe to say speed is a factor. It doesn’t look like she was wearing a seat belt.” The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle, Halverson said.

The woman, who was driving alone in a Ford Explorer, was not identified pending notification of next of kin. She was in her 20s, Halverson said.

The vehicle struck a power pole on the east side of River Road between Browns Landing Road and El Rio Lane, leaving the pole bent at a 45-degree angle and leaning into power lines about 20 feet off the ground.

The road was blocked on the two-lane blacktop in both directions, forcing drivers to turn around. Deputies could be seen searching a nearby field with flashlights.
